Tips for a successful verification session, steps to verify your residential address, instructions for resubmitting your identification, and assistance for document upload issues.
Depending on your location, we will ask for your ID and a selfie, either during the sign-up process or when a certain deposit threshold is reached. This ensures it's really you creating the account, helps us keep our platform secure, and takes no time at all.
Before starting your identity verification session, you must grant access to your camera and microphone - if you haven't done so yet. This step is essential for a smooth verification process. To learn how to authorize these permissions based on the device you're using, please follow the steps below:

Operating system
Verifying your identity is quick and easy as long as you follow these tips!
- Capture a clear, readable photo of your valid ID with matching details to your Uphold account.
- No masks, hats, or sunglasses, prescription glasses allowed.
- Ensure your ID is valid for at least three more months.
- Photograph the whole ID, no cut-off corners or text.
- Try the Mobile App for camera issues on a computer.
- Refresh the page to restart after mistakes. Avoid incomplete submissions.
- No scanned or saved image files accepted.
- Use a live selfie, not a photo of a photo.
- Position light source in front for a well-lit face.
- Capture a head and shoulder shot against a plain background, like a passport photo.
Automatic Address Verification: When possible we attempt to verify addresses automatically by cross-referencing them against reliable sources, saving you from uploading documents. However, in some cases, additional documentation may be required.
If we're unable to automatically verify your address, or if you want to update it later on, we’ll ask for acceptable proof of your residential address:
- Utility bill* (e.g.electricity, water, gas, internet, cable TV)
- Bank statement*
- Credit card statement*
- Lease agreement or mortgage statement*
- Tax return
- Council tax bills
- Government-issued certification of residence
To make sure everything goes smoothly:
- Your document must include your full residential address and your full name.
- Scan the entire document or the full page. Avoid cutting off any corners or sides - cropped documents are not accepted.
- Upload the original PDF document or scan the physical document (photos of a screen are not accepted).
*This document must be dated within the last 60 days.
If your initial verification wasn't successful, or if you've reached a transaction threshold that requires full identity verification, you will see a "Complete account verification" banner in your app.
- In the app, tap the “Complete account verification” banner.
- Tap “Start verification” & follow the instructions
- Take a picture of your government-issued ID.
- Follow the instructions to capture a real-time selfie of yourself.
If your document isn't being accepted by Uphold, or you're seeing an error on registration, here's a few fixes you can try:
- Make sure you have the latest version of your internet browser or Uphold mobile app.
- Verify if the file size is bigger than 8 Mb. Try with a smaller file size - for example, 2 MB.
- Try to reset your internet connection (router or modem).
- Internet connection restrictions could be the cause (firewall, anti-virus) - please try from another network, for example if you are trying from your office, try it from your home network.
