Vault has three keys: one held by Uphold and two held by you, including the Vault Key, which is required to access your Vault. This article explains how to generate, store, and migrate your Vault Key.
How your Vault key is generated
Your Vault Key is automatically generated the first time you set up your Vault after successfully subscribing.
To create and store your Vault Key, you must be logged into a cloud storage service:
- On iOS, this means being signed into iCloud.
- On Android, you need to sign into Google Drive and select an account for storage.
Where to find your Vault key
On Android, if you have multiple Google accounts, you will be prompted to choose where to store your Vault Key.
On iOS, your Vault Key is automatically stored in iCloud Drive, linked to your Apple ID.
Your Vault Key file name and default location will be:
DO NOT DELETE - Uphold > UpholdVault.txt
If you are transferring your Vault Key manually, maintaining this file structure will help ensure a smooth migration.
If you cannot retrieve your Vault Key, check that you are logged into the correct cloud service and refer to the Vault health check for prompts on restoring your key.
How to transfer your Vault key to a new device
If you switch between Android and iOS, you must manually transfer your Vault Key between Google Drive and iCloud.
After transferring the key, your Vault health check screen will show a warning, prompting you to restore your Vault Key from the cloud.
If you are not logged into a cloud service, you will need to sign in first. Once the key is retrieved successfully, the health check will pass, confirming the key is in place.
