Why are my funds considered unclaimed property?
If you don’t log in to your Uphold account for a long period (typically 3 to 5 years), your funds may be considered unclaimed property. This happens when there's no user activity for an extended time, and we’re unable to reach you. By law, we’re required to transfer those funds to your last known state of residence - this process is called escheatment.
How long does it take for my funds to be considered unclaimed?
Each U.S. state has its own rules and timelines for when funds are considered unclaimed. In general, this period ranges from 3 to 5 years of account inactivity (no logins). Once that period passes, the funds must be turned over to the state.
How can I stop my funds from being sent to the state?
It’s simple - just log in to your Uphold account every now and then. As long as there’s regular activity on your account, your funds won’t be marked as unclaimed or sent to the state.
How can I recover funds that were sent to the state?
If your funds were escheated, you can still recover them by applying directly through your state’s unclaimed property program. Use the official state directory to find your state’s website and file a claim on https://unclaimed.org/property-type-all-other-property/#
