What is a crypto deposit address?
It’s an address we give you to receive crypto funds from external wallets, right into your Uphold account. The address will vary based on the asset and network you select during the crypto deposit flow.
Is the address only given to me?
In most cases, yes. The main exception is with memo/tag-based networks. For these networks, we might use shared (pool) addresses, depending on the asset being transferred.
For example, we provide unique addresses to deposit XRP (via XRPL) or XLM (via Stellar). In these cases, a tag or memo is provided along with the address and must be included to identify your account and ensure the funds are credited correctly.
Who controls the crypto deposit address assigned to my account?
The crypto deposit address is controlled and retained by Uphold as part of our custodial services. This means that when you deposit funds to that specific address, they are securely held by Uphold on your behalf. This structure is essential for the security and management of your funds on our platform.
You can manage, trade, or withdraw these assets at any time directly from your balance in the Uphold app. It is important to remember that since this is a deposit-only address, all withdrawals must be initiated from within the app, not from the address itself.
If you are looking for non-custodial and/or assisted self-custody solutions, please explore our Vault or Uphodl options.
Do my crypto deposit addresses ever change?
They can! While this is not a regular event, Uphold - like any other exchange - might occasionally update deposit addresses for security and/or operational reasons. Rest assured, if your deposit address changes, we’ll always notify you via email and/or an in-app banner.
Why do I see a balance on the crypto deposit address but not in the Uphold app?
When you deposit crypto, the funds are quickly credited to your Uphold account so you can trade, withdraw, or use them right away. However, an external blockchain explorer (a tool that tracks public transaction history) might still show a balance on the deposit address.
This is completely normal and happens because Uphold consolidates funds from deposit addresses based on internal fund management processes. The address itself is used only to identify your deposit, while your actual funds are made available to you immediately in your Uphold account.
